Most customers come to water-based PU foaming with a picture of the finished product in mind — how soft, how thick, how light, how it should feel — rather than a target expansion ratio and density. That is normal. Our job is to work backwards from the product you want: which resin, which additives, what expansion ratio, and whether your existing line can actually run it.
What water-based PU foam coating is for
Water-based PU foam coating (also called PUD foam coating or mechanical foaming) works by mechanically beating air or a specific gas into a water-based PU dispersion, then coating or impregnating and drying it into a soft, resilient, cushioning foam structure. The range of applications is wide; these are just a few common directions:
- Textiles and synthetic leather — the primary application area, covering hand-feel layers, cushioning layers and laminating substrates, and a good deal more besides
- Medical and cosmetics — dressings, release carriers, powder puffs, porous structural materials
- Electronics — cushioning and gap filling; adhesives, films, and the adhesive films that combine the two
It can also be used in leather processing. Density and expansion ratio, softness and hand feel, thickness and resilience can all be tuned in the formulation to suit the finished product.
The formulation and the machine — you need both
Getting water-based foam to where you want it takes more than the resin and the formulation. It takes a machine good enough to match them; the two have to work together.
When either side falls short, the material tells you straight away:
- Uneven cell distribution
- Expansion ratio varying too widely
- Density too high at the selvedge and surface, over-lofted through the middle
All of it lands on the final physical properties. If your end application is a functional material held to a specification, neither the formulation nor the equipment is optional.
Equipment least of all. The finest ingredients meet the wrong cookware and dinner is still a disaster — buy the wrong machine and no resin, however good, will rescue what comes off the line.
Most suppliers sell you either the resin or the machine. Gabriel puts the water-based PU resin, the additives, the suggested formulation, the technical consulting and the foaming equipment together in one place — that is our biggest difference in this field.

The questions we will ask you
This is not a test — we ask so we can confirm up front whether your existing line can run it, rather than let you buy material and discover the problem later:
- Where does the product go? How soft, how thick, what hand feel? This sets the direction of the formulation.
- Your coating method? Knife, roller, transfer coating, impregnation or something else?
- Maximum oven temperature and line speed? These two are the most common feasibility bottlenecks.
- Your existing equipment? Do you already have a foam generator, or are you evaluating one?
- Expected annual volume and production timeline?
Gabriel's materials are usually not the cheapest.
But unit price is not the only cost. In water-based foaming the real cost is whether the foam runs stably, what your yield is, and how much rework you do. We look at the processing method, treatment steps, labour hours and yield as a whole, to make your total cost more efficient.
If all you need is the lowest unit price, the market has plenty of options. If you are solving a problem nobody else can solve — then we should talk.
